Diagnostic Services - Postcoital Test |
If you are unable to get pregnant, but you are ovulating, your fallopian tubes are not blocked, and your partner’s sperm are normal (or he does not want to have them checked), your doctor may suggest a postcoital test.
This procedure evaluates cervical mucus after intercourse and provides limited information on the presence and movement of sperm.
The test is done one to two days before ovulation and eight to 12 hours after having sex. The doctor collects and looks at a cervical mucus sample by inserting a speculum into your vagina, similar to a pap smear.
The test is abnormal if the mucus does not stretch 2 inches; the mucus does not dry in a fernlike pattern; no sperm or a large number of dead sperm are in the sample; or the sperm are clumped together and not moving normally. |
